Mocha Mousse: Thoughts on the Pantone Color of the Year

I have to admit… Most of the wedding community was not prepared for the 2025 selection for Color of the Year from Pantone- Mocha Mousse. I thought without a shadow of a doubt, it would be shade of green. So did everyone else I discussed this with after the announcement was made… It’s an interesting choice, for a number of reasons.

Mocha Mousse | 2025 Color of the Year

In recent years, we have seen Pantone more often than not -taking cues- rather than setting trends with their predictive forecast. Last year we saw Peach Fuzz, which was unimpressive and felt safe in a manner of speaking. In 2023, we were given Viva Magenta which HAD ITS MOMENT. I daresay if that wasn’t the most well-received and exciting color for the wedding community in some time! We saw so much inspiration and creativity generated from that selection. Now, its important to note that the color of the year isn’t just relevant to the industry, but also fashion, decor, interior design, and so much more. Ultraviolet {2018} and Living Coral {2019} were also hot years for Pantone in the wedding industry. So what is the story with this neutral and “been done” choice?

From Pantone:

“Underpinned by our desire for every day pleasures, PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse expresses a level of thoughtful indulgence. Sophisticated and lush, yet at the same time an unpretentious classic, PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse extends our perceptions of the browns from being humble and grounded to embrace aspirational and luxe.” ~Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director Pantone Color Institute

Mocha Mousse in my signature design style

Now personally, I love brown. It’s one of my favorite colors, and certainly one I enjoy incorporating into weddings when applicable. That being said, I understand where they are looking to direct this inspiration and influence the creative interpretation of brown and neutral shades. I think this is one of those years where we have to see what is done with this announcement… It definitely doesn’t feel like one of those Color of the Year selections that *instantly inspires* quite yet. It will define who is ready to innovate, and who is ready to play it safe. Are you ready to challenge yourself with this color?
